Web accessibility sheet

Accessibility

Web accessibility refers to the practice of making websites usable by people of all abilities and disabilities. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, all users can have equal access to information and functionality. For example, when a site is coded with semantically meaningful HTML, with textual equivalents provided for images and with links named meaningfully, this helps blind users using text-to-speech software and/or text-to-Braille hardware. When text and images are large and/or enlargeable, it is easier for users with poor sight to read and understand the content. When links are underlined (or otherwise differentiated) as well as coloured, this ensures that color blind users will be able to notice them. When clickable links and areas are large, this helps users who cannot control a mouse with precision. When pages are coded so that users can navigate by means of the keyboard alone, or a single switch access device alone, this helps users who cannot use a mouse or even a standard keyboard. When videos are closed captioned or a sign language version is available, deaf and hard of hearing users can understand the video. When flashing effects are avoided or made optional, users prone to seizures caused by these effects are not put at risk. And when content is written in plain language and illustrated with instructional diagrams and animations, users with dyslexia and learning difficulties are better able to understand the content. When sites are correctly built and maintained, all of these users can be accommodated while not impacting on the usability of the site for non-disabled users.
The needs that Web accessibility aims to address include:
Visual: Visual impairments including blindness, various common types of low vision and poor eyesight, various types of color blindness;
Motor/Mobility: e.g. difficulty or inability to use the hands, including tremors, muscle slowness, loss of fine muscle control, etc., due to conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, stroke;
Auditory: Deafness or hearing impairments, including individuals who are hard of hearing;
Seizures: Photoepileptic seizures caused by visual strobe or flashing effects.
Cognitive/Intellectual: Developmental disabilities, learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia, etc.), and cognitive disabilities of various origins, affecting memory, attention, developmental "maturity," problem-solving and logic skills, etc.;
As a client, to me accessibility would mean being able to access a certain account on a certain website easily. Also as a client it would mean that anyone can enter their account on the website no matter the disability.

As a web developer, to me accessibility would mean making sure that the web site is available to those with disabilities or without disabilities. This would mean that everyone can use the site without worry.

As a business manager, to me accessibility would mean being able to have functions on the site that would allow me to hire a range of different employees, including the disabled. This would make my business quite successful when it comes to taking in employees also it would make my company quite popular. Also I would be able to take in employees with different nationalities because of the excellent accessibilities.

Leader activity report/evaluation.

Overview:

Personally I think that we could have chosen a better leader. He didn’t direct others very well and didn’t do much himself. As a leader, one should have certain qualities. Ben, our leader, had none of these qualities. While we were working on the design and structure of our project, he was playing a computer game on his PC. A leader should be able to control his workers and assign certain people to certain jobs. Our leader, Ben, just let everyone decide what they were doing and made no attempt when everything went down hill. The team worked really well, even without a proper leader. Our project, in the end, turned out alright but could have been better if a different leader was allocated.

The Designers:

The designers worked really well, and the structure worked in the end. Despite all the disagreements, it held 300g worth of weight. The design was very simple so the builders could easily follow it.

The Builders:

The builders worked very hard and helped with the design as well as the building. This again should have been under the control of Ben Carrinton, but was a complete failure.

The Researchers:

Only one of our researchers actually researched anything. While the other was playing on games. The research done helped a lot with the design and structure because it made it stronger.

The Equipment Checker:

The equipment checker worked well. Having someone for that job made sure that no extra equipment was used and was a challenging activity.

The Scribe:

The scribe had a page of everything that was needed and the jobs and who was doing them. This helped because if anyone forgot what they were doing or forgot what they needed. They could just look at the page and they would know.

Last but not least:

The Leader:

As I have mentioned before, our leader, Ben Carrinton, wasn’t the best choice we could have made. As he was lazy and made no attempt to sort things out when they went down hill. Because of this, the end result was failure.

Overall:

I feel that the team worked quite well and adapted to any mistakes made by people. Although all could have been immensely improved.

activity 3.5 newspaper report

Newspaper Report

I chose a newspaper for my printed media because it focuses on one thing e.g. adverts.
The Meon Valley News attracted my attention because I may find some of these adverts may be useful to me.
The purpose of the Meon Valley News is to persuade as it is mainly full of adverts with the occasional story. You could say that the Meon Valley News has two purposes, being to persuade and to inform.
The Advert I have chosen is Malcolm Dunning Saddlery advert.
This adverts purpose is to persuade as it uses an offer on fly rugs, fly masks and summer clothing.
By using this offer on the main advert would attract your attention. It also uses a colour scheme of red, yellow, white and black. Apart from black these are all bright colours that would naturally catch your eye as they are used on warning signs along the road or any other important signs, because these colours suggest urgency.
With bright colours, bold fonts and a special offer it is expanding its audience by such a number it increases business by hundreds of customers.
Malcolm Dunning’s logo is not that complicated, it is simply the name of the business in front of a transparent horse head, making it easier for the reader to recognise the company.
Also the advert contains the website, telephone number, fax number and e-mail on it, navigating the reader to that particular site or company.

Re: ICT security
More money needs to be put into ICT so that new and old servers can be improved and more servers can be bought leaving more computers in a reliable state. These computers haven’t been maintenance for ages. More staff is needed to keep the computers in a ore reliable state as one member cannot complete this task on his/her own it is a difficult task and needs more money put into it. The future depends on ICT security without it all else shall fail.

The doors and windows can have locks installed or keypads put in so that only an access code would open the door. You can have a back up computer. You can have a lock and key on your door. You can put fire prevention systems put in there. Shelves can be put high on the wall so all things will be above water. Have a water proof server room. A vault can be put on the door.

Someone could break down your door or smash windows. Your keypad could be broken so anyone can get in. Someone could hack into your back up computer.
The vault can be broken into.

Virus checking software would check and find the viruses and the firewalls would stop the viruses from getting into the computer.

The advantages of a swipe card:
Swipe cards can store additional information
The additional information can be used for other services like:
Library membership
Cashless vending
Storing biometric templates.

The disadvantages of a swipe card:
· Swipe cards can be lost or stolen
· They are easily damaged at such a state they are un-useable.

The advantages of an access code:
An access code is like a password it is easy to remember hard to guess

The disadvantages of an access code:
Just because its hard to guess doesn’t mean it can’t be guessed, anyone could see or overhear you typing or talking about the access code and get hold of it.

The advantages of a key to a secure room:
It can’t be unlocked without the key so only the person/people with the key can get in.
The disadvantages of a key to a secure room:
You could lose the key.

I think having an access code as a door security system is the safest way because no one can get hold of the code unless told.

A system is needed available 24/7 because someone might need some data for a certain deadline that must be met.

5.7 Report on the Klez Virus (www.pcworld.com)

The Klez Virus has been worming its way into different computers for up to seven years now. The Klez virus is a piece of software that distributes its self as a virus but behaves in such a way that you think its trying to protect your computer.
The Klez virus will send it self as an e-mail labelled as “Klez virus removal tool” or it may even rummage through your hard-drive and pick the addresses of any familiar received e-mail. As soon as the recipient opens or even previews the attachment, the virus will go through all of your hard drive and extract any information. It also goes through and pilfers through the e-mail addresses and address books of the victims friends and sends the virus on.
The “Klez virus” was first detected October 2001. This virus is also known as the “un-stoppable virus”. In the seven years that this virus has been going round detected, but un-stoppable, there has been constant warnings. Now Antivirus Vendors have now discovered seven versions of the “Klez Virus” and still no solution has been found.

The Randex Virus:
The difference between the Klez virus and the Randex is that the Randex virus uses the internet to send it self on. The Klez virus can get into any computer strong or weak password, but the randex virus can only enter computers with a weak password or no password at all.
The Randex virus has the capabilities to enter a computer and control it froma comletely different computer via IRC(Internet Replay Chat) channels. This creates a line of zombie computers all being controlled by one computer.

The Shield Deluxe 2009:
I find this one the most effective because it will protect your computer from any type of virus, spy-ware or any other e-threats. It also has software that stops you from leaking any of your personal information via e-mail or online chat. Shield Deluxe scans every website you use, every e-mail you recieve and any instant messaging traffic for viruses or spy-ware.

How estate agencys use ICT!

How Beals Estate Agency Use ICT

Beals Estate Agency uses Ict in a number of different ways.
Beals have three different websites for advertising any type of property, anywhere in the country allowing them selves to a wide range of customers.
Beals use a particular network called “WINMAN” for rental because they find it the easiest way to connect to further ISP's. “WINMAN” will capture all requirements, define and specify any open, distributed and scalable ISP connection from anywhere in the country. This makes it easier for Beals estate agency to get an popular business across the country. Each time Beals puts properties up for sale on their website they need to go take pictures of them first, to do this Beals uses digital cameras because it has a high colour quality allowing them to take great photos first time round. Also with a digital camera they can upload it onto their computer as soon as they have the chance without having to worry about buying any particular software. Another advantage of a digital camera is the fact that it is inexpensive, and allows them to take literally hundreds of photos without having to worry about buying films and having limited storage. All these advantages mean Beals can put more money into their popular business with hardly any problems.
Beals Estate Agency's across the country are all wrapped around computers, their whole business is on their computers, for example they use data bases to store all of their important data and other databases for their unimportant data. They also use spreadsheets keep control of their money and make sure that they don't exceed their budget. Beals also have CTV cameras which can be controlled and viewed by the main security computer.

1) Business relevant technology is a type of system that allows you to network several computers together so folders placed in your hard drive can be shared among the other computers connected to that network.

2) An estate agency would find that the advantages of using a network are:
A network is quick and easy to use, this means keeping customers happy, it’s easy to share files across to other estate agents. By using a network an estate agency would find it much easier to serve customers at a quick and easy pace.

3) People say that ADSL is a type of DSL because they both use telephone lines, but ADSL uses telephone lines in a different and quicker way.

Ethernet: The role of the Ethernet is to ensure the data arrives at the right computer.
Wifi: The role of the wifi is to connect to many others computers wirelessly to avoid using cables.
Network Interface Card: The role of the NIC is to prepare, send and control data on the network.
Cabling: The role of the cabling is to do the same as the NIC but it doesn’t work quite as quickly.
Client Server: The role of the client server is to function with multiple different clients of different capabilities.

3) Q: Research and analyse reasons why switches are better than hubs.
A: A switch is much quicker than a hub.
